Remote Phone Reception in Cape Range
Achieving cellular phone and data connectivity at Osprey Bay, Cape Range National Park, Western Australia.
A Note on Modern Technology: Starlink
It is important to view this project in its historical context. When this was completed in 2012, custom directional antenna solutions like this were critical for remote mobile connectivity.
Today, with services like Starlink, achieving high-speed internet in remote Australian locations has become vastly simpler. Colin uses Starlink at home in Mallacoota and it has been a game changer, making complex high-mast antenna setups largely a thing of the past.
Key Technical Points & Results
The Challenge
Extremely poor mobile signal due to a rapid 300m elevation drop over 23km from the nearest cell transmitter.
The Expert Advice
Consultation with Doug at Telco Antennas Pty Ltd, who identified the common overrated "22dBi" antenna pitfall.
The Engineering Solution
A properly rated 14dBi fully welded Yagi antenna, with a critical focus on maximising mounting height.
The Result
A stable 4-bar signal delivering reliable voice calls and mobile data throughout the mobile consulting deployment.

"Signal is quite poor in the area due to the rapid descent of elevation... height is absolutely critical in achieving a good signal. So rather than spending money and using a thicker grade of cable or a larger antenna, the most economical thing you can do is find a way to raise the antenna higher."
